Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has declared a state of disaster after a new case of the New World screwworm. Late Friday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced that it’s temporarily closing the border to Texas livestock to prevent the parasite’s introduction and protect animal health. The screwworm fly lays its eggs in the open sores of animals, and its larvae feed on the flesh of their host. Global’s Nathaniel Dove reports.
While anticipation and excitement is building for the upcoming World Cup, FIFA is also facing criticism, accused of squeezing soccer fans for every penny. They’re calling for a halt to construction on the 10,000-unit project, claiming it will permanently alter the pristine environment that’s home to exotic wildlife. Albania’s government says the project would be transformational for the former communist nation as it seeks to attract more tourists. Redmond Shannon reports.
