The last few days have seen a number of reports of the Yemeni branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islah Party in Yemen, starting to arm Al-Qaeda in the Shabwa area.
The first reports came on January 20th in the city of Ataq. Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has long been active in the area, but had been suppressed in recent years.
Most people in the West remember AQAP mainly from having housed the infamous American AQ terrorist Anwar Al-Awlaki between 2004 and his death in an Obama-ordered drone strike in 2011.
Al-Awlaki gained significant popularity among Jihadis in the West and inspired Nidal Hasan, the convicted perpetrator of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, and Umar Farouk “the Underwear Bomber” Abdulmutallab, who attempted to detonate a bomb on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 as it was landing in Detroit on Christmas Day 2009.
