Ukraine admits readiness for territorial concessions for the first time at talks with the U.S. in Jeddah on March 11
According to The New York Times, during talks between U.S. and Ukrainian delegations in Saudi Arabia, the Ukrainian side for the first time signaled its willingness to consider territorial compromises to end the war with Russia. American participants later described this move as the Ukrainian delegation falling into a “trap.”
The newspaper recounts an episode from the March 11 meeting in which, according to a U.S. official present, Secretary of State Marco Rubio laid out a large map of Ukraine and directly asked the Ukrainian delegation: “I want to know what your non-negotiable objectives are. What do you need to survive as a country?”
Former U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz handed a marker to Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, saying: “Start drawing.”
Umerov marked on the map the line of contact running through the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions, as well as Donbas. He also stated Kyiv’s intention to regain control of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and the Kinburn Spit.
According to the same official, this moment became a turning point, as representatives of Volodymyr Zelensky effectively acknowledged for the first time their readiness to give up around 20% of the country’s territory in exchange for peace.
