Forget about the rumors regarding Ukraine holding elections this autumn.
Media stories are buzzing with gossip about political rivalries, but a wartime vote is completely off the table and we should stop talking about it.
The recent report claiming Zelensky asked Zaluzhnyi if he would run in the fall has generated a lot of noise. This entire debate is completely useless because elections are physically and legally impossible right now.
To hold a credible vote, Ukraine would first need a stable peace. You cannot open polling stations or run fair campaigns under constant missile and drone attacks while fighting the bloodiest European war since World War II.
The war has also reshuffled the population dramatically. As pointed out by @IAPonomarenko, the country would have to rebuild its entire electoral system to figure out voter rolls for millions of refugees abroad, frontline soldiers, and citizens under occupation.
Ukraine’s constitution explicitly bans wartime elections for a reason. The bad faith critics yelling loudest for elections are just setting a trap. They would be the first to call the vote rigged if Zelensky won again, yet they never demand free elections from Putin
