Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and his security services are doing everything they can to contain public discontent. Among the measures they have taken are restrictions on popular internet services and even periodic internet shutdowns. As The New York Times reports , Russians are increasingly criticizing their government’s decisions. Ordinary citizens, politicians, and even celebrities are publicly expressing their dissatisfaction with the new restrictions. Journalists believe that with their critical statements, Russians have breathed life into the Russian political system, which no longer tolerates genuine opposition. However, they noted that the Kremlin has left little room for dissent. The publication emphasized that more and more influencers and bloggers in Russia are actively advocating for digital rights. Moreover, politicians from the so-called “systemic opposition,” who almost always vote with the ruling United Russia party, recently criticized the government for restricting access to Telegram.
According to the Russian state-run polling center VTsIOM, Putin’s approval rating has been falling for seven weeks in a row and now stands at 65.6%, roughly the same level as immediately before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. “The internet restrictions have turned a large number of people against the ruling class, if not against Vladimir Putin personally. That’s why we’re seeing falling approval ratings and people who never spoke out on political issues suddenly becoming politically active,” Mikhail Komin, a political scientist at the Center for European Policy Analysis, told reporters. The publication recalled that Russian authorities, citing security concerns, have blocked mobile internet access for several days at a time in the vast majority of Russian regions for several months. They have also blocked or restricted the operation of an increasing number of foreign apps—including Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, and Telegram—forcing Russians to use domestic “alternatives.” Journalists added that Russians attempted to stage protests in some cities, but authorities prevented them. Now, Russian citizens are forced to content themselves with airing their complaints on social media. It’s worth noting that criticism has come from some unexpected voices. For example, Russian TV presenter and beauty blogger Victoria Bonya, who currently resides in Monaco, stated on Instagram that “internet restrictions make life in Russia impossible.” The publication emphasized that she was cautious in her direct criticism of Putin. The video has garnered over 30 million views, and Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, was grilled for two days by journalists demanding comment. He eventually said the Kremlin was working on the issues Bonya raised. “The attack on the internet is seen as an attack on privacy. People are being deprived of the most basic services. This is causing a lot of discontent,” Abbas Gallyamov, a former Kremlin speechwriter who left Russia after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, told reporters. Even loyal members of Putin’s own party are expressing discontent. The publication recalled that Belgorod Region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov previously stated his concern that restrictions on Telegram could endanger the lives of residents who rely on the app for air strike warnings. Earlier, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stated that Russian residents are facing internet restrictions, in particular “due to measures to combat terrorist threats.” According to Putin, widely informing the public about internet restrictions to prevent terrorist attacks could undermine the country’s security. He added that a mechanism must be developed to ensure the uninterrupted operation of “life-sustaining internet services” while mobile internet is restricted. Social media is commenting on the admission, noting that Putin slowed down Telegram to control information, but that the first to suffer were those who financed and promoted his war.
