An armed suspect opened fire at a Secret Service checkpoint near the White House on Saturday evening at approximately 6 p.m. The male approached the security post at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, pulled a gun from a bag, and fired on officers. Secret Service personnel returned fire, fatally shooting the suspect. The gunman never breached the White House perimeter, and no Secret Service officers were struck during the exchange, though a bystander was wounded and one agent was taken to hospital as a precaution.

As many as 30 shots were reported near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building during the incident, which briefly locked down the White House. The suspect remains unidentified pending investigation. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that federal operatives are assisting the Secret Service, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also investigating the shooting.

This marks the latest security incident involving the White House, occurring just days after Pennsylvania Avenue’s pedestrian plaza reopened following a month-long closure. The shooting comes only weeks after an alleged assassination attempt on President Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25, representing the third such serious incident involving the president since 2024.
