Taliban legalizes child marriage and violence against girls in Afghanistan
The Taliban regime has officially abolished the minimum marriage age for girls, replacing it with the vague concept of “puberty,” which can begin as early as 8–9 years old.
New rules state that the silence of a “mature virgin girl” is considered consent to marriage.
The Taliban also published a decree, “Principles of Separation of Spouses,” which mentions the possibility of divorce for girls who have reached puberty and are married. This implies that child marriages are permitted.
The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) condemned the new rules of the authorities, which it calls “de facto,” while Russia has recognized them officially.
