Canada-US “friction has to do with messaging,” says Trump’s ex-economic advisor

Kelly Ann Shaw advised U.S. President Donald Trump on international economic affairs during his first term. Now, she shares with The West Block what she believes are potential roadblocks to trade discussions between Ottawa and Washington.

“I think a lot of it is about messaging. It’s also about substance, too. But again, if you’re going after the president directly, if you are calling the United States untrustworthy, and that’s the urgency for negotiating new deals, how would you feel about that message?” Shaw said.

“I think a lot of this friction has to do just as much with messaging, with attitude, with the relationship, as it does with some of the substance of really, you have two neighbours, two allies who have a lot more in common than they have apart,” Shaw added.

At the outset of the war in Iran, US President Donald Trump suggested that regime change was one of its goals. He later said it had been had achieved, a claim that is disputed by critics who point out that the same repressive forces in Iran still hold power.
American attempts at regime change in Iran have a long history. In 1953 the CIA, assisted by British intelligence, led a deadly coup that toppled Iran’s last democratically elected leader. It’s a moment in history that poisoned US-Iranian relations, and helped launch the theocratic revolution to come. But the immediate success of ‘Operation Ajax’ would convince the CIA to carry out a wave of similar plots around the world.

Russia-Ukraine War: A massive Ukrainian drone attack rocked Moscow and nearby regions, damaging residential buildings and killing at least four people. Russian authorities said air defences intercepted hundreds of drones overnight, making it one of the biggest assaults on the capital in over a year. Several civilians were injured as panic spread across affected areas, while infrastructure and homes suffered significant damage during the attack.
