4 May 2026: Two U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class (Flight IIA) Aegis guided missile destroyers, USS Truxtun (DDG-103) and USS Mason (DDG-87), came under a coordinated Iranian attack while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Neither vessel was struck after Iran launched small boats, missiles, and drones in what U.S. defense officials described as a sustained barrage.
Both ships deployed their onboard defensive systems which would include the Mk 15 Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS), Mk 45 Mod 4 5-inch/62-caliber naval gun, and surface to air missiles such as the SM-2 (Standard Missile-2) and Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM).
Defenses for the transit were also bolstered by up to 100 land- and carrier-based air support assets including AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and F-16 fighter aircraft throughout the passage.
CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper confirmed six Iranian fast-attack boats were destroyed after opening fire on U.S. ships. Trump’s subsequent Truth Social post put the count at seven.
The transit was the operational launch of Project Freedom, a U.S. initiative announced by the president the previous day to escort commercial shipping through the strait and restore safe transit.
The UAE separately reported intercepting Iranian cruise missiles, and blamed an Iranian drone strike for a large fire at Fujairah port that hospitalized three people.
An ADNOC-operated tanker was also struck by drones outside the strait.
Oil prices surged on the day’s events, with Brent climbing sharply before settling near $113/barrel. Gold edged toward $4,550/oz.
Senior U.S. officials told Fox News that the U.S. was closer to resuming major combat operations than it had been 24 hours earlier.
No orders to end the ceasefire had been given, officials said, but the military was described as “rearmed and retooled” and standing ready to respond.
