Napala is not an isolated story.
Since 2017, Islamic State-linked militants have waged an insurgency in northern Mozambique, especially in Cabo Delgado. More than 1.3 million people have been displaced. Thousands have been killed.

Open Doors ranks Mozambique 39th on its World Watch List. In its latest report, it recorded at least 88 Christians killed, 49 churches or Christian buildings attacked or closed, 100 Christians abducted, and at least 10,000 Christians internally displaced.

These are minimum figures. In places like Cabo Delgado, the dead are not always counted with precision. The destroyed churches do not hold press conferences. The refugees do not trend.

That is part of the problem.

Christian persecution is not a slogan. It is not useful only when it can be attached to a preferred political narrative. It is real.
