The United States has announced plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, with the Pentagon saying the move is expected to be completed within the next 6–12 months. The German defence ministry said that the US troop exit was to be ‘expected.’ The decision comes amid growing tensions between the US and its NATO allies. NATO says it is working with the US to understand the withdrawal, while also urging European nations to increase defence spending and take greater responsibility for regional security. The move follows a public spat between Donald Trump and German leader Friedrich Merz. Merz had criticised the US position on Iran, prompting a sharp response from Trump. The US currently maintains tens of thousands of troops in Germany and has also hinted at possible withdrawals from Italy and Spain.
