Off-duty NY state trooper shoots teen during attempted carjacking

A teenage boy is accused of carjacking an off-duty New York state trooper in Yonkers, according to police. It happened on Sunday a little before 1 p.m. at the gas station at Midland and Kimball avenues. Police say the trooper was just finishing up getting gas when the 17-year-old suspect approached her, brandished a knife and entered the driver’s seat of her vehicle. “The trooper fired one shot from her off-duty firearm, striking the suspect in the left arm. The round continued into his torso. The suspect accelerated the vehicle toward the rear of the gas station, driving through a shed and fence at the end of the property before coming to rest in the parking lot of the adjacent apartment building,” said part of a press release from Yonkers police. The suspect then ran off toward Midland Avenue. Police quickly caught him. A knife was recovered, according to officers. The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for his wounds and remains in stable condition. He faces several charges, including robbery, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing. The trooper was left with minor injuries. She is a 12-year veteran of the agency, assigned to New York City, according to officials with the New York State Police.
