Sheriff Chris Nanos is ‘a bad cop,’ Pima County official says

Pima County, Arizona, Sheriff Chris Nanos, who is overseeing the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, faces renewed scrutiny from local officials who are reviewing his past suspensions while working as a cop in El Paso, Texas. “He beat, almost to death, a handcuffed robbery suspect who was in the back of a squad car with a flashlight,” Pima County Supervisor Matt Heinz told “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” on Thursday. “He’s a bad cop. He made really bad decisions and then lied about his past.”

“It’s heartbreaking”: Mother demands justice in son’s death after defendants released on bail

Emotions ran high in a packed Bronx courtroom as two defendants accused in the suspicious death of Michael Woody were released on bail — prompting his mother to publicly demand justice. Woody was found unresponsive inside the apartment he shared with his girlfriend in November 2024. Prosecutors outlined multiple charges during the arraignment, including kidnapping, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, against his girlfriend Kashaunna Watts and a second defendant, William Mullens. Woody’s mother, Thea Woods, confronted the defendants in court, describing her grief and frustration. She says her son was bound with zip ties and suffered extensive injuries. “It’s heartbreaking. It shouldn’t have happened,” she said, adding that Woody’s daughter has now lost her father.vProsecutors say their case includes phone records, surveillance video, and four eyewitness accounts. Investigators allege the incident escalated after an argument, leading to a plan to remove Woody from the apartment. Authorities say Watts’ father — a former law enforcement officer — later died by suicide before an arrest could be made. Despite the serious allegations, no murder charges have been filed because the medical examiner did not rule Woody’s death a homicide.
