We are now apparently in another “Russia Invades Gotland” news cycle, a staple of Swedish potboiler fiction for decades. The better question military planners and foreign correspondents should be asking is this: What if the Russians invade Saaremaa and decide they like it so much, they defect? I was sitting across from the head of foreign counterintelligence unit at a dinner in late 2021.
The conversation moved somewhere I couldn’t follow. I needed a specific piece of information. And I couldn’t ask for it directly.
So I didn’t ask.
What I used instead is called Presumptive Elicitation — the primary extraction technique taught in counterintelligence environments that most communication and negotiation courses have never heard of.
Here’s why direct questions fail in adversarial rooms:
When you ask a direct question, you signal an intelligence gap. The other person’s amygdala registers the gap as a threat and activates the prefrontal cortex to manage the response. They give you what they decide you should have. Not the truth. A managed version of it.
Presumptive Elicitation bypasses that entirely.
You state what you appear to know — at roughly 80% accuracy — and go silent. The brain cannot let a near-accurate statement stand without responding. It generates a correction, a confirmation, or a deflection. All three tell you something. And none of them feel like an interrogation.
