Evidence of the scale of the failure in Islamabad is slowly being made public.
While the tripartite group in Islamabad was negotiating the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. warships were actively attempting to transit it.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy issued a “last warning” over radio and launched a surveillance drone which U.S. forces shot down.
Inside the negotiation room, Araghchi reportedly told Witkoff, “Never threaten the Iranians.”
Multiple on-the-ground accounts, including Turkish media present at the scene, describe the exchange as having escalated to the edge of a physical confrontation.
The gatekeepers of the revolution were there to hold the line, that much is obvious.
But simultaneously and publicly challenging them on the issue of Hormuz was a slight that could not go unchallenged.
Arab and Persian Culture 101 could have told you such.
This is just one more example of how sending untrained diplomats, who lack the skill, training, and context to understand Iranian culture and politics, to negotiate with Iranian hardliners was a mistake.
The talks failed before wheels up.
