Davit Gabaidze Resigns as Chairman of Adjara Supreme Council

Davit Gabaidze has resigned as chairman of the Supreme Council of the Adjara Autonomous Republic, the region’s legislative body, after nearly a decade in the post.

Gabaidze, a Georgian Dream member who has held the post since 2016 through three consecutive convocations, announced his early departure during a March 30 press conference.

At the press conference, he thanked Georgian Dream founder and honorary chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, along with other officials. He said his decision to resign followed “consultations” with the ruling party, and cited the need for “change” in his life and in the work of the Supreme Council as the “only motivation.”

According to Batumelebi, a local online media outlet, Tsotne Ananidze, a Georgian Dream member who currently chairs the Human Rights Issues Committee of the Supreme Council, will take over as chairman. In response to a journalist’s question, Gabadze said the decision is up to the Supreme Council majority, but that he would “welcome” Ananidze’s candidacy.

The Supreme Council is the region’s 21-member legislative assembly. Since the 2024 parliamentary elections, Georgian Dream has held 13 seats.

Davit Gabaidze is not the first Georgian Dream official in Adjara to leave early. In April 2025, Tornike Rizhvadze, head of Adjara’s government, also resigned. Rizhvadze was replaced by Sulkhan Tamazashvili, the UK-sanctioned former head of Tbilisi police. In July, Rizhvadze sustained a gunshot wound in what authorities said was a suicide attempt. He was transferred to Turkey for treatment and reportedly relocated to Germany with his family in November.

A number of Georgian Dream ministers and officials left their posts in 2025. Some of them were later charged and imprisoned, mostly on corruption and money-laundering allegations, including former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and former State Security Service Chief Grigol Liluashvili.
