The controversial “Chat Control” bill has once again failed in the European Parliament
A renewed push for a vote this week was blocked, despite earlier conditional support for extending interim rules during negotiations.
Talks between Parliament and EU member states have now collapsed, leaving no chance of a last-minute deal.
311 MEPs voted against, 228 in favor, and 92 abstained.
“Chat Control” is the nickname for the EU’s interim rules that would make it mandatory to scan through all private chats, photos, emails and messages, alleged to search for child abuse material, but without any warrant, suspicion, or court order.
Critics have repeatedly warned that it would amounts to mass surveillance of ordinary citizens through apps such as WhatsApp under the pretext of child protection.
