PSA: Contrary to some claims on here, Seymour Hersh has not retracted a word of his reporting on chemical weapons in Syria. He stands by all of it. I say this having spoken both to him and to Laura Poitras, director of the new Hersh doc “Cover-Up.”
What Sy does say in “Cover-Up” is that he now thinks he misjudged Assad’s character. This is in reference to the torture committed by Assad’s government.
The way this sequence is edited — in my opinion, in a misleading fashion — I can see why some are taking it as a retraction. It’s not. He stands by his journalism, which showed that the US suppressed internal evidence of false flags by the US-backed insurgency. Hersh’s reporting is supported by ample evidence, both that he obtained and that has emerged since.
People who celebrate Sy’s career but rush to discredit his Syria reporting ought to reflect on whether they are really free of the propaganda constraints that he has long defied.

A million more documents and still “a few more weeks”? That timeline is doing the DOJ no favors. The longer this drags out, the more people assume transparency isn’t the top priority.
