China pressured a British university for years to stop research on human rights abuses
Documents show that Beijing spent over two years trying to silence Sheffield Hallam University over its studies on Uyghur forced labor in Xinjiang.
University staff in China reportedly faced threats from individuals believed to be linked to Chinese state security, and the school’s website was blocked in the country.
Eventually, the university refused to publish the final report by Professor Laura Murphy’s team and later banned her from continuing the research.
Murphy is now suing the university, accusing it of “sacrificing academic freedom for Chinese tuition money.”

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan near the city of Mazar-i-Sharif.
At least eight people were killed and nearly 200 injured.
The city’s famous Blue Mosque, a major historical landmark, was damaged.
The quake was also felt in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
