Chilean artist faces backlash for unauthorized political sculptures at Madrid wax museum

Chilean Artist Provokes Controversy with Political Sculpture Installation in Madrid

Chilean artist Nico Miranda ignited heated debate at the Madrid Wax Museum by portraying Argentine President Javier Milei as a lapdog of U.S. President Donald Trump, and depicting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “Chuky,” the malevolent doll from popular culture, reports 24brussels.

Miranda and his team covertly accessed the museum, placing their provocative sculptures in the Oval Office room display beside the figure of Donald Trump. The installation and subsequent photography occurred in a span of approximately 20 to 30 minutes, all without the museum’s authorization.

The exhibition featured additional figures represented as rats with the faces of various Spanish politicians, further amplifying the political commentary reflected in Miranda’s work.

Describing his installation as “action art and contextual art,” Miranda stated the intent to intertwine the museum’s environment with pressing global matters, explicitly referencing the ongoing “genocide in Gaza.”

This incident marks a continuation of Miranda’s controversial work; in 2023, he placed an unauthorized sculpture of King Juan Carlos I in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol. Known for his provocative, site-specific interventions, Miranda’s art challenges prevailing political and cultural narratives.

His creations effectively blend mass culture, satire, and contextual critique to reinterpret public spaces, pushing audiences to reconsider familiar settings. Employing symbols from popular culture and politics, Miranda crafts rhetorical puzzles that invite deeper analysis. He classifies his practice as “art of action” and “art contextual,” underscoring the need for situational awareness and global relevance in artistic interventions.

Miranda’s portfolio frequently explores themes of identity, power structures, and Western decadence, employing satire and visual metaphors. He holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from Universidad de Chile and a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts with a specialization in Sculpture from Universidad ARCIS. His teaching career at Universidad de Chile spanned from 2011 to 2016.

Exhibitions of his work have taken place at notable institutions, including the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Santiago, Galería Metropolitana in Santiago, Galería Pabellón 4 in Buenos Aires, Saatchi Gallery in London, and Feria PINTA in Miami.

India-UK CETA aims to double trade by 2030, says PM Modi at CEO Forum

India-UK CETA is roadmap for shared progress and prosperity: PM Modi at CEO Forum

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on October 9 that India and the United Kingdom aim to double their bilateral trade from the current approximately USD 56 billion before the targeted deadline of 2030, reports 24brussels.

Speaking at the India-UK CEO Forum in Mumbai, Modi described the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) as a transformative roadmap, enhancing cooperation between the world’s two largest economies. “Today, our bilateral trade is approximately USD 56 billion. We have set a target of doubling it by 2030. I am confident that we can achieve this target ahead of time,” he stated.

This year, according to Modi, has been pivotal in solidifying India-UK relations amid global uncertainties. He highlighted his visit to the UK in July, where the signing of CETA marked a significant milestone. “I deeply appreciate and congratulate my friend Prime Minister Starmer for his commitment and vision for this historic achievement. This is not just a trade agreement, but a roadmap for shared progress, shared prosperity, and shared people,” he said.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is currently on a two-day visit to India, also spoke at the forum. Modi emphasized that the agreement would provide crucial market access and bolster micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), creating new employment opportunities for millions of youths in both countries.

Modi proposed four new dimensions to broaden CETA’s scope: ‘C’ for Commerce and Economy, ‘E’ for Education and People-to-People Relations, ‘T’ for Technology and Innovation, and ‘A’ for Aspiration. He reiterated confidence in achieving the target of doubling bilateral trade ahead of schedule.

The signing of CETA in July significantly enhances the economic partnership between India and the UK. The agreement ensures duty-free access for 99% of India’s exports to the UK, impacting nearly the entire trade spectrum. It aims to create opportunities for labor-intensive sectors such as textiles, marine products, leather, footwear, and sports goods, as well as in burgeoning industries like engineering goods, auto components, and organic chemicals.
