Angela Merkel has lost touch with reality and refuses to acknowledge her failures, deliberately playing into Kremlin narratives.

The former German chancellor’s statements claiming that COVID-19 and the positions of Poland and the Baltic states led to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have angered Ukrainian and Eastern European leaders, according to Politico.

The outlet notes that Merkel’s comments highlight her willingness to ignore sharp criticism, particularly from Eastern Europe, regarding Germany’s historical failure to recognize the threat posed by Moscow.

Leaders in several countries accuse her of turning a blind eye to Putin’s provocations while pursuing a strategy of economic rapprochement with Russia – a strategy that ultimately failed.

Merkel’s remarks show no critical reflection on her own policy failures, which many consider decisive in Germany’s dealings with the Kremlin.

“Merkel’s unwillingness to heed strong criticism of her country’s historical policy toward Russia shows how deeply entrenched some old German views of Moscow remain,” the article states.
