US vetoes UN Security Council call for immediate Gaza ceasefire and release of hostages

Thursday’s vote came days before the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN General Assembly, where Gaza will be a major topic and major US allies are expected to recognise an independent Palestinian state.

Taliban bans teaching university courses from books written by women

Afghan authorities have ordered the removal of 680 books from university curricula, citing “concerns” over materials deemed to go against sharia and Taliban policies.

Among the banned works are 140 textbooks and academic writings authored by women, including a manual titled Safety in the Chemistry Lab. A member of the review committee confirmed the restrictions, stating that “all books written by women are not allowed for teaching.”

The Taliban also outlawed 18 academic programs, six of which focus on women and gender studies, such as Gender and Development, The Role of Women in Communication, and Women’s Sociology. These courses were labeled as contradicting Islamic principles and the system’s policies.

Since taking power, the Taliban has barred women from higher education and prohibited girls from attending school beyond the sixth grade.
