Brussels – Tram 51 will cease operations between Belgica and Marguerite Duras starting August 5, 2025, and will remain closed until April 2026 due to significant road and track construction work at Sainctelette Square in Brussels, reports 24brussels.

As reported by VRT News, during this period, tram 51 will continue to operate in two separate sections: north of Belgica and south of Marguerite Duras. The halted service is part of a comprehensive redevelopment plan aimed at enhancing Sainctelette Square. This initiative will involve the complete removal and replacement of the existing tram tracks, necessitating a prolonged disruption of nearly two years.

Impact on Tram 51 and Bus 14 Operations

To facilitate travel during the disruption of tram 51, alternative routes have been arranged. Travelers can utilize metro line 6 from Belgica to Simonis, where they can transfer to lines 2 or 6, proceeding to Yser. A brief walk will then lead them to the Marguerite Duras stop. For those wishing to avoid the walk, staying on metro line 6 to Zuidstation/Gare du Midi will allow them to reboard tram 51 heading north.

Additionally, bus 14, which services UZ-VUB, will not stop at the usual Vanderstichelen and Belgica stops during the construction at Sainctelette Square. Instead, these stops will temporarily relocate to the side lane to ensure continued access to bus services. The extensive renovation work at Sainctelette commenced in April 2024 and is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2027, fundamentally transforming the square and its usage.

The redevelopment plan aims to reconnect the canal banks through a new “bridge square,” providing expanded spaces for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport. Car lanes will be reduced, making way for wider walking areas and a safer bike path, thereby promoting sustainable urban mobility.
