But it doesn’t make SSH use my known_hosts file in a custom location. You are right, the info in known_hosts is not really “public” info, but at the same time, it only contains public keys, so it is not sensitive. I would argue that it is more secure to have known_hosts in VCS than to disable strict host key checking.
