Washington Today (12-11-24): Sec. Blinken testifies on Afghan withdrawal; FBI Dir. Wray will resign

Secretary of State Antony Blinken gives long awaited testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, saying, “Even as we work to address the places where we fell short, I firmly believe President Biden decision to withdraw from Afghanistan was the right one. American troops are no longer fighting and dying in Afghanistan. The American people are safer and more secure.”

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), Committee Chair, calls the withdrawal a “catastrophic event” that “was the beginning of a failed foreign policy that lit the world on fire.”

The House passes the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) after a contentious debate over a ban on the military’s health program covering some care for transgender children of service members.

Pete Hegseth, President-elect Trump’s nominee for Defense Secretary, continues meeting with Republican Senators may be on the fence about voting for him. Today he met with Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME).

FBI Director Christopher Wray announces he will resign in January, with three years left on his 10-year term, avoiding the need for President-elect Trump to fire him, which he has said he would do. This will make way for President-elect Trump’s FBI Director nominee Kash Patel.
