My impressions and hypothesis: Leon Trotsky was the agent of the Russian Military Intelligence before WWI.
His second wife Natalia Sedova was a daughter of Tsarist general, well known at that time Arctic explorer, according to some sources.
Trotsky, inspired by the Revolution of 1905, was behind the start of the WWI: his agitation and secret organizing led to the actions of Gavrilo Princip, “who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife Sophie.”
The German Abwehr hated Trotsky, blaming him for their loss in WWI. It was them who were behind Raymon Mercader, the Trotsky’s assassin, not the hapless Stalin’s NKVD.
“Abwehr operatives acted as lookouts for the Soviet team that finally killed Trotsky in August of 1940. The cooperation between the Soviet and German intelligence services was not confirmed until 1994, when Pavel Sudoplatov …”
These and other aspects of Trotsky’s life and role in History need further research.
