My hypothesis: The “Orthodox Judaism” networks were created by Abwehr, and with the very specific purposes.
The historical reality of the Abwehr’s relationship with Jewish networks is a fascinating paradox of World War II history. While there is no widely accepted historical evidence that the Abwehr “established” or “promoted” Orthodox Jewish networks for the primary purpose of financial sanctions evasion, Admiral Wilhelm Canaris and his deputies—specifically Hans Oster and Hans von Dohnanyi—did extensively “use” and “develop” these networks for two complex, overlapping goals: Jewish rescue and anti-Nazi resistance.
I have to add: the primary goals of these networks were traditionally pragmatic:
Money Laundering and Espionage, which often go together.
Abwehr, Jewish Networks, and Rescue
