If Civil Contract loses in Gyumri, PM’s legitimacy will be questioned in Armenia

Snap elections to the Gyumri City Council are scheduled for March 30, in which 9 political forces will fight for power. Alpha News spoke with Ruben Mkhitaryan, a mayoral candidate for Gyumri from the My Strong Community party.

“Our goal is to make Gyumri the most eventful center in Armenia. We want the flow of tourists not only in the summer months but throughout the year. It is very important for us to ensure Gyumri develops proportionally and in a balanced manner, so it does not lag behind the capital. We have plans to modernize the housing stock, including repairs to roofs, balconies, and front doors. We also have initiatives for landscaping, garbage collection, and introducing a new transport system,” Ruben Mkhitaryan said.

According to him, the current electoral processes in Gyumri are pivotal not only for the city’s development but also for Armenia’s future.

“It is essential for me that in Armenia’s cultural capital, the city of Gyumri, the ruling force fails to establish a governing body. If Civil Contract loses in Gyumri, there is no doubt that the prime minister’s legitimacy will be called into question in Armenia,” Mkhitaryan noted.

The mayoral candidate ruled out any alliance with the ruling force, Civil Contract, or with any political groups that have not explicitly declared their opposition to Civil Contract.

When asked about what forces they are ready to cooperate with, Ruben Mkhitaryan responded: “Those representatives of the opposition who have an oppositional discourse, who have a clear anti-government stance, and have never been associated with Civil Contract. We are ready to cooperate with such forces.”
