The ancient Greeks expressed addition mostly by juxtaposition, but sporadically used the slash symbol “/” for addition and a semi-elliptical curve for subtraction. In the famous Egyptian Ahmes papyrus, a pair of legs walking forward marked addition, and walking away subtraction.
