Pakistan’s leaders are preparing to host peace talks between the US and Iran in its capital Islamabad.

Thousands of police officers and security forces have been deployed ahead of the talks, which are due to begin on Saturday 11 April.

US Vice President JD Vance said he was “looking forward to negotiations” and would work with Iran if they acted in “good faith”.

The Iranian delegation is yet to arrive in Islamabad and Iran’s parliament speaker said a ceasefire in Lebanon must happen “before negotiations begin”. 

Meanwhile, a senior official told the BBC that Lebanon will only take part in separate talks next week, with Israel, if a ceasefire is in place beforehand.

On Friday, April 10th, Chinese President Xi said “people on both sides of the Strait are all Chinese” while meeting with the Taiwan opposition leader. Meeting in the Great Hall of the People, Xi told Cheng that today’s world is not entirely at peace, and peace is precious. Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of Taiwan’s largest opposition party, the Kuomintang said she is on a peace mission to reduce tensions with Beijing.

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Friday strongly hinted that he will make another run for the White House in 2028 during a conversation with Rev. Al Sharpton at the National Action Network convention in New York.

Mr. Sharpton recalled having lunch with Mr. Buttigieg at Sylvia’s Restaurant in Harlem during his 2020 run.

“Just so my calendar’s clear, should I be reserving a table at Sylvia’s? Are you going to run again?” Mr. Sharpton asked.

 

“You save me a seat. I’ll be there,” Mr. Buttigieg replied.
