Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine face a major hurdle. The core issue is the disputed Donetsk region. Russia wants Ukraine to cede territory it currently controls. Ukraine insists on retaining its land. Both sides have suffered heavily in the fight for Donetsk. Potential compromises are being explored, but a resolution remains elusive.

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin late Thursday. Russia said the meeting between US envoys and Putin went well into the early hours of Friday. Russia warns durable peace is not possible without resolving territorial issues. Trump and Zelenskyy call their meeting on Thursday in Davos positive.
