Belarusian volunteer Aleksei “Uzh” Lazarev has been killed in the war in Ukraine. He was among the first to meet the Russian invaders with weapons in hand in February 2022.
Aleksei Lazarev, callsign “Vuzh,” was one of the first Belarusian volunteers to go and defend Ukraine in the early days of the full-scale invasion. In the Kastus Kalinouski Regiment, made up of Belarusian volunteers fighting on Ukraine’s side, he served as a surface-to-air missile system crew commander.
He did not go to war alone. Aleksei and Veronika married in March 2022 in Ukraine and served together in the Kastus Kalinouski Regiment. Their wedding was the first among Belarusian volunteers during the war.
At the end of 2022, like many others, he left the Kalinouski Regiment following internal disputes. But in early 2025, Aleksei returned to the front, joining another unit, TUR-225, where he was responsible for the drone direction. There, he was killed as a hero.
