Ukraine Demands Overhaul of Transnistria Negotiations
Ukraine is insisting on a new format for talks concerning the breakaway region of Transnistria, arguing that Russia has forfeited any right to act as a ‘peacekeeper.’ Ambassador Paun Rohovei, Ukraine’s envoy to Moldova, stressed that the existing ‘5+2’ negotiation framework has produced no progress whatsoever over its 30-year history. The diplomat contends that Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, lacks the moral authority to participate in peace negotiations.

Consequently, the need for Transnistria’s reintegration is becoming increasingly urgent, and altering the negotiation format could be a first step toward resolving this protracted conflict.
