Carney and Xi met in Beijing today and signed a number of important deals, seen as a breakthrough in relations between the countries after a couple of frosty years.
– Canada will allow up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles into the Canadian market at a preferential tariff rate of 6.1% (a significant reduction from the previous 100% tariffs imposed in 2024 to protect the domestic auto sector). China also committed to a considerable investments in Canada’s auto sector over the next three years.
– China will lower its retaliatory tariffs on Canadian rapeseed products to a combined rate of approximately 15% (down from around 100%), providing quick relief to Canadian farmers who have been hit hard by the trade dispute.
This reciprocal move significantly eases
a multi-year tariff spat that began when Canada followed U.S. leads on EV tariffs, prompting Chinese countermeasures on agriculture.Other agreements in cooperation in energy, agriculture and finance were also made during Carney’s visit to Beijing.
