🇿🇦 Russia recruited South African video gamers for its war against Ukraine using a gaming app

The men, who regularly used Discord while playing the military simulation game Arma 3, signed one-year military contracts in Russia after interacting with someone identifying themselves as “Dash” on Discord.

One of the recruits was killed in Ukraine, with a medical certificate confirming he died in active service on October 23, 2024, in the Luhansk region.

On November 20, Bloomberg reported that a daughter of former President Jacob Zuma was involved in recruiting men from Botswana and South Africa for Russian military service. The recruits had allegedly been told they were attending a bodyguard training course.

In late November, a female South African state radio presenter was arrested along with four men for allegedly recruiting for the Russian military. They have since been charged with breaking the law and released on bail.

The scandal has drawn widespread attention in South Africa, as participating in or assisting a foreign military has been illegal in the country since 1998.
