Saudi Arabia launched airstrikes yesterday against several locations in STC-controlled parts of Yemen, killing around 20 people.
In connection with the airstrikes, forces allied with the internationally recognized PLC government launched an offensive against STC-held areas.
There are 3 dangers connected with this new offensive.
1. Al Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula (AQAP), which still holds some territory in Yemen, could use the chaos to reestablish its presence in areas it had previously lost.
2. The Muslim Brotherhood could strengthen its position in Yemen again. The Islah Party is the unofficial Yemeni branch of the Muslim Brotherhood and holds 2 out of 8 seats in the PLC government.
3. The Iranian-allied Shia Islamists in the Houthi Movement could take advantage of the chaos created by the PLC launching its new attacks on the STC. The Houthis control areas that border with areas held by the STC and PLC alike. The fighting against the Houthis in these areas never fully stopped and there’s a risk the Houthis could use the moment to launch new offensives.
