If the United States had vital interests in the South Caucasus, President Trump would not have confused Armenia with Albania and Azerbaijan with Cambodia, said Robert Kocharyan, the second President of Armenia, during his press conference Tuesday.
In his view, the US will not intervene in discussions between Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding a corridor passing through Armenia, as Washington has already gotten what it wanted, and the rest does not interest them. Kocharyan said this was a correct conduct from the perspective of US interests. According to him, Washington knows its interests, pursues them, and is acting correctly from that standpoint.
“Any country’s leader must first and foremost think about his own country’s interests. I am not against the US — we [i.e. Armenia] once had very effective cooperation with them,” the second president of Armenia emphasized.
He added that Armenia must have the courage, advance its own interests, and not think that if doesn’t say something, Trump might look at it unfavorably.
“That won’t happen. On the contrary, he will respect it more. But they [i.e., the Armenian authorities] went to the White House ‘in diapers,’” Kocharyan said.
He described as “illogical” the expectation that Trump should respond to the statements made by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan regarding the corridor through Armenia.
“If they annoy [Trump] too much, he will say that both of them disappointed [him]. Why are you expecting the US president to respond? He doesn’t even know where Armenia is. Armenia doesn’t have that significance [for Trump],” the second president stated.
