Profits made from treating NHS eye patients by five private firms are so large they equal those made by the 100 with private finance initiative (PFI) hospital contracts, research shows.
The disclosure has led to calls for ministers to cap what can be “eye-watering” levels of profit made by private operators when they take over key public services.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan decided not to respond to a question concerning the now-viral AI-generated image of President Donald Trump dressed in papal garb, as the conclave draws nearer and nearer.
Dolan did break his silence on the controversial image: “I hope [Trump] didn’t have anything to do with that,” Dolan said, speaking after a Mass in Rome, where the cardinal is preparing for this week’s start of the conclave of cardinals, who will select the next pontiff.
Other prominent Catholics have ripped into Trump for sharing the AI-powered image of him as the pope.
“We just buried our beloved Pope Francis, and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter,” the New York State Catholic Conference said in a statement.
“Do not mock us.”
