Washington Today (1-30-25): President Trump suggests DEI led to deadly helicopter-plane collision

President Donald Trump calls for a moment of silence and speaks of the country’s “hour of anguish” following Wednesday night’s midair collision over the Potomac River in Washington between an Army Blackhawk helicopter and American Airlines plane. All 67 people on board –three soldiers and 64 passengers and crew — are believed to have been killed.

President Trump also suggests the blame for the tragedy is diversity initiatives at the Federal Aviation Administration promoted by Democratic administrations that led to lower standards when hiring air traffic controllers.

Three of the President’s cabinet nominees have Senate confirmation hearings.
Tulsi Gabbard, up for Director of National Intelligence, is asked about her past comments praising NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and her meeting with former Syrian leader Bashaar al-Assad.

FBI Director nominee Kash Patel gets questions about whether he would seek to prosecute President Trump’s political enemies and whether the president was right to pardon January 6th defendants convicted of assaulting police officers.

Health & Human Services Secretary nominee Robert F. Kennedy, Jr is asked for a second day about whether he thinks vaccines are safe.

The Senate Budget Committee approves OMB Director nominee Russell Vought, 11-0, with Republicans only voting and all Democrats boycotting.
