At least 59 people were forcibly detained in psychiatric hospitals in China, many for lodging complaints about the Chinese authorities, according to a BBC Eye investigation.
Many of them were given anti-psychotic drugs, and in some cases electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), without their consent.
While there have been reports for decades that hospitalisation is used in China as a way of detaining dissenting citizens without involving the courts, a leading Chinese lawyer has told the BBC that the issue has recently seen a resurgence.

Firefighters are battling to maintain the upper hand on a huge and rapidly-moving wildfire that swept through rugged mountains north of Los Angeles. More than 50,000 people being put under evacuation orders or warnings. Also, an evacuation warning was issued for Sherman Oaks, California due to a brush fire that burned approximately 10 acres (4 hectare).
