In Bangladesh, angry protesters stormed the headquarters of a political party considered to be an ally of ousted former prime minister’s Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party. Attackers on Thursday evening set fire to the office of the Jatiya Party in the capital. They also clashed with party members. It is considered one of the major political forces in Bangladesh that helped Sheikh Hasina stay in power. So far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
A student uprising in July 2024 brought down the Bangladeshi government – and forced Sheikh Hasina to flee the country.
Back then, video clips of overjoyed protesters filled the world’s social media, following Hasina’s downfall. Her government had carried out a long and brutal crackdown as she tried to cling to power. According to Bangladesh’s health ministry, more than 1,000 people were killed by security forces – and 30,000 people were injured. Some of them are still in hospital today.
